The main palace of Sanssouci, built on vineyard terraces between 1745 and 1747, is the oldest part of Potsdam historic buildings.

Sanssouci was the summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The palace was built after plans of the king himself by architect Knobelsdorff in 1745 as a ''Maison de Plaisance''.

West of the main palace of Sanssouci is the picture gallery and in the East the Old Orangery. The Orangery was rebuilt as residential rooms in 1771/1774.
