Quedlinburg is located north of the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt at river Bode. From the 10th to the 12th century it was used as as Palatinate by the emporers of the Holy Roman Empire. Worth seeing is the historical old town of Quedlinburg. Quedlinburgs architectural heritage became UNESCO world heritage in 1994.

Here at St. Bernardino Pass commander Hannibal crossed the Alps during the Second Punic War. He marched his army with
55000 warriors and 37 elephants over the 2788m pass.
Today a paved road connects the Rhone Valley in Switzerland with the Aosta Valley in South Tyrol.
